thanks. i was trying to reply gently because on some lists,
this has been a very sensitive subject.

For instance, I found myself struggling to explain the concept of file name completion. If the user doesn't know how to utilize that, then spaces (or extended ascii) in a file name become a problem, presuming they attempt to use the shell at all.

the shell sucks for new users for reasons like that. there
are too many concepts to explain all at once, including a
few concepts that are specific to Mac OS X (such as swapping
":" & "/", open -a, osascript ...).

however understanding the shell is incredibly useful for
scripters.
