Right, I meant "vanilla" in the sense that no third-party
coercions are involved. :)

Mmmm, I can't currently test under OS X, so I'll have to take your
word for it. I am testing under OS 9.1, Script Editor and Debugger.

I'm quite certain that I moved Jon's out of the Scripting Additions
folder before testing, as well as the few other non-Apple additions
that I have. It must be a System 9 thing???

What happens when you do this on OS X?:

display dialog {theScript} -- where theScript is a script object
