"giving up after" in pre 8.5?

I'm new on this list so please forgive me if this is an old question.

I've just finished writing my first AppleScript which worked wonderfully on System 9. However, I just discovered that the "giving up after" optional field of the "display dialog" command wasn't supported prior to OS 8.5. Since I need to run this script on a 68K machine (and OS 8.1), is there a simple way to work around this problem?
