Changed definition of word? No dashes?

Has the definition of "word" changed, so it no longer includes the dash?

Since upgrading to Mac OS 9.1, my scripts for account calculations have gone crazy! Earlier, I selected things like:

word -1 of "bla bla -435,00 "
Which returned -435,00
which was fully correct. (The "," is the decimal character in Sweden, the "-" is a dash but of course its meaning is supposed to be minus.)

But now, all of a sudden this returns only 435,00

What the hell has happened?
Can I control this in any way?
I MUST solve this in some way!

Seems like the definition of word has changed.
According to the AppleScript language Guide for 1.3.7, the dash shall be included in the definition of a word.

Puzzled,
