But it is possible for applications to use a different definition of word --

have you been using it inside a "tell application..." construct?

I find this *extremely* strange!!
My 8.1 (US version) machine returns the leading "-", when executed directly without telling any app! (Example: word -1 of "bla bla -435,00 ")
I now also tested on my OS 9.1 (US) by installing the old app my script actually was targeting (Tex-Edit Plus), but it does *not* return the leading "-". But it really *did* return the leading hyphen before, which was with 9.04 swedish! So the app (Tex-Edit Plus) has not changed or affected this as far as I can tell.
One might then have suspected that it is a language thing, but as I said above, my 8.1 US did return the leading hyphen! In addition, I now went into the control panel Text and changed "Behavior" from English to Swedish (which is claimed to affect sort order, case conversions and word definitions). Same result! i.e still does not return the leading hyphen!?
So what is going on here? Why did it return leading dash before, and why can't I have it now?
(Although it is good to hear that you have been using it for a long time with consistent bahavior, while being dependent on this behavior, but your scripts would obviously *not* have worked on my G4 with 9.04 SE, or my Quadra with 8.1 US.....)
With puzzling regards,
