What constitutes an open file?

Greetings list

I have the my ASIP 6.3.2 server set to disconnect all users (even
admins) after 20 minutes of inactivity. I find this feature very useful
and do not wish to change that setting. I also have the server set to
leave connected those users with open files. However, I have noticed that
while working on Word documents off the server I still get disconnected
while that file is open. So I created a small image (Disk Copy) file and
mounted the image. I tried to "put away" the volume while the image was
still mounted. It would not let me because the image file was in use. So I
though I was making progress. But after the 20 minutes I was disconnected
from the server with the image file was still mount. I find that odd.

What constitutes an open file? Why is my ASIP not recognizing that it has
Word, Disk Copy, and other files open?

Thanks again
