The consequences, by the way, are not confined to this unimportant,
querulous mailing list. If you have a mac.com shared folder in iTools (and I
would guess that the new servers came in specifically for iTools and the
increased use of public servers and mac.com), you'll find out what happens
if you use mac-format ASCII-8 characters on any file you put there. Not only
do such characters get badly mangled, and inconsistently (different ones
resulting from the same originals), but the file appears on the web page
directory twice! Both versions are mangled, but differently, and while one
of the mangled versions is your real file which downloads as intended, the
other mangled version just leads to an error page.
When I first put up my scripts on my mac.com site, every .sit file name
there contained the option-f symbol (which avoided name conflicts between
the script file within the folder of the same name). So all 65 download
files appeared to be duplicated, one with a weird umlauted-character, and
another, almost the same name, with a plain ascii-7 character. I now
appeared to have 130 files there, half of which led to error pages. I find
it hard to believe that no one was aware of this behavior when they decided
to purchase the servers. I guess none of this seemed important in relation
to other considerations, but it still seems rather odd to me since the whole
mac.com and iTools thing was promoted as a great user-friendly feature,
which mostly it is.
