Hypercard does let you save a stack as a standalone application. However,
when you do that it basically creates a copy of the HyperCard application
and uses your stack as the home stack.
A standalone hypercard application can still send and receive AppleScript
commands. I always thought the overhead of the Hypercard app was too much
for creating standalones, but now with huge hard drives and lots of ram and
fast processors it may actually be worth it.
Also, hypercard and the hypercard applications you create are Scriptable,
attachable, embedable, and tinkerable.

HC-stacks was that they looked quite poor. Hypercard can look pretty good and
it can also look pretty poor. It depends on who designs the stack and what
tools they use. To use color, for example, requires third party solutions.
Also, the most recent version of Hypercard is the fastest ever. It can also
handle huge stacks (Thousands of cards with tons of data) with ease. I have
one stack which I use every to store TV listings (date, channel air time,
title and several descriptive text fields) that can be searched and sorted
in an instant.
I would love to see a carbonized version of Hypercard running on OS X on a
G4 dual processor!
