Impossible to delete spreadsheet rows in AppleWorks??

I want to delete rows in an AppleWorks spreadsheet.
None of my attempts work. Is it possible at all?
tell application "AppleWorks 6"
delete row 5 of spreadsheet of document 1
--doesn't work, and no error messages!?
end tell
It is possible, however, to do primitive menu stuff on a selection:
select menu item "Delete Cells
" in menu "Format"
but I would like to avoid such ugly code.
