It probably doesn't matter but I'm not sure what you mean by "cease to work
later in the power-up cycle" Erik, are you referring to startup items
scripts?
I think you may need to look at your installed Scripting Additions,
if you read this you'll understand the erratic nature of such errors:

last paragraph 'Classic Scripting Additions'.
The error messages will give clues as to which OSAX isn't loading,
unfortunately that may not be the troublemaker so you'll have to resort to
some protracted elimination testing to finger the culprit unless someone can
suggest a better way.
