left or right, right or left chevrons, I don't know any official
designation. I was just adding enough information so that folks could do
the unmangling. In retrospect, Paul's convention is the better one.

The point being that line 2 of my script should look like

set n to {<<class usrf>>:theList}

but the << thing is really one character typed with option backslash
and the >> thing is really one character typed with shift option backslash
