Maximums?

The questions:
Is there a maximum length for pathnames?
Is there a maximum depth for recursion?
Is there a maximum 'depth' for pathnames?

I'm hoping that the answer to one of these is 'yes" it would explain my
problem.

The story:
I wrote a script that recurses through a file structure fixing folder
and file names as it goes.
After a while it errors out saying, "File <great long pathname> cannot
be found"

A friend suggested that I could be running out of stack with all this
recursion, in spite of allocating 50MB to the droplet. Is this likely?
possible? fixable?

I have no superfluous leisure; my stay must be
stolen out of other affairs; but I will attend you awhile.
