Have you considered using DHCP to provide the Macs with their IP addresses and
gateway info? Over Christmas, I set up a Netgear 314 Internet Router so my
Dad's two computers could share his cable modem connection. Its a clever little
box, and handed out the right information with no muss and no work on our part.
Its a combination switch, router, and NAT box, with a web server for configuring
it. Since I'm usually running around with scraps of paper with IP addresses
jotted down on them, saying to myself, "did I give .14 or 15 to that last box",
DHCP was startlingly easy. (Its like my experience with USB, when you install a
new device, and DON'T have to re-boot: surprise that it wasn't harder.)

Of course, this suggestion merely changes your scripting problem from "How do I
set the address from x.x.x.n to y.y.y.n" into "How do I set the address mode to
'DHCP'?"
