Silly man, I mentioned what I use but wasn't saying to run out and buy
BBEdit! I also mentioned Alpha which is shareware. I haven't used
PageSpinner so I'll have to take your word for it! My experience with
the major commercial editors has been as I said, noisy html. I shall
try to get around to taking PageSpinner for a test drive but have already
filled up my plate. Although a little quirky at times and containing
enough options to make a first time user's head spin it's a very powerful
editor for all sorts of layout and programming languages.

All the same, thanks for the tip on PageSpinner. It's on my list!

My basic advice seems sound enough:

don't be seduced by the flashy wysiwyg editors,
follow the recommendations of the w3c <http://w3.org/>
don't be suckered into writing for one specific browser.

I think we probably agree on at least that much....
