Is it possible to convert a simple, stand-alone AppleScript application
into a system extension?
I know that it is possible to convert a very simple application into a
system extension by using a program such as ResEdit and then changing the
app to type = "appe" and making it "background only" under the Size
resource... however I tried this with a simple applescript that was "Stay
open" and had no intro-window, and it simply crashed my computer on
startup.
When you convert an application to an "appe" to be used as an Extension,
I believe that only "Global Floaters" (a type of window) can be used...
and also, no menus. I have a feeling that the reason the script crashed
may have been because it had menus. I may be able to delete the menu
resource from the applescript... I might have a look at that, maybe I
can't.
I know exactly how to write the code for the script (it will be on an
infinate loop - non-CPU intrusive loop, and it will monitor some things
on my computer while it is running). The reason I don't simply put an
alias to it in the "startup items" folder is this: The computer it is
running on is a family computer, and many people use it. They will often
quit all running applications without even thinking, and there is no way
for me to stop them... my family consists of people who do not understand
computers, but they have grown up on computers with limited RAM so a
natural response for them is to frequently quit open applications to free
up RAM (even tho we have 200 MB of it !!! grrr).
Anyways, that's not the point of my message. I COULD learn to program in
RealBasic, or learn how to make an extension in C/C++ ... but I don't
know these, and I don't want to waste my time... because AppleScript is
PERFECT for the stuff I want to do, and it's much simpler to use. And I
don't want to use the Startup Items folder.
Any help much appreciated !! thanks
