I've run into a strange problem running a script to perform linear
regressions from an AppleWorks 5 spreadsheet.

You can try the Linear Regression script for AppleWorks at:
http://www.tandb.com.au/appleworks/linear_regression/
Instead of requiring you to select cells and run the script, it provides an extra function for AppleWorks so you can use it in a formula.

I can't comment on your problems running from a Netboot image, other than to suggest that perhaps you have properties in the script, wjich AppleScript wants to write back to the read only file. You could try using global variables instead of properties.
