I can confirm that with the jacks from the AV monitor pulled out, my
desktop machine always chimes at startup, whatever the volume settings.
My PowerBook doesn't if its volume level is set to zero.

However, a simple 'set volume 0' script in the Shutdown Items folder (of
the PowerBook) doesn't seem to be effective in changing the volume at
all. It apparently works for some people though, so I suppose it must be
something to do with what else goes on at shutdown on the machine
involved. I've found this script to be effective:

set volume 0
beep

I don't know if the 'beep' forces the issue or what. Anyway, it's not
heard and neither is the subsequent startup chime.
