Forgive the cross posting, I just sent this to Apple as well as a feature request using their feedback form. Tell me what you think - this was brought on by someone asking how to use services without an application (dictionary example) and I got to thinking that if a service exists, a three line script should be able to exploit it doing nothing more than displaying an AppleScript dialog for input and the results in another...
-----------
I was just considering the use of services and what a wonderful and simple form of integration they provide when it hit me:
Services can and should be bridged with AppleScript and could function similarly to Scripting Additions - transparently provide additional functionality to scripters and even apps without explicit services support.
As services provide a simple procedure call type interface which has basic discovery (for determining appropriate context based on parameter and return data types) and a simple command and result operation this would fit easily into the functional paradigm in AppleScript.
Please, please, I want this! The simple ability for very basic scripts to use exposed services rather than direct scripting would be a subtle but distinct advantage over some of the current methods (IMHO).
Thanks for listening,
Roger Howard
