I started with Info-Mac <
http://www.info-mac.org/> which is an email list for discussing all things Macintosh. It was an enormous help when I was a beginner (although being a computer scientist, I wasn't much of a beginner by that time).
The essential quality that will drive you to understand things is simply a pressing need to do something. That provides you with direction and a framework for asking questions.
Our direction here is AppleScript. Info-Mac's is simply Macintosh.
In addition there is NetNews (manifested as Newswatcher and other apps on the Mac) which is like email discussion groups except there's no email (i.e. all the messages show up in a news reader application which fetches them from the server while you read and post).
Nevertheless, having a task you want to accomplish with your computer gives you direction. Then, having a task you want to make simpler points you at automation and AppleScript, so you'll be in the right place here already. ;)
