>Number one FAQ: don't tell the Finder what it doesn't need to be told!

I think part of the reason people tell Finder to do things is
historic...somewhere around the early Mac OS 8 days (I don't remember the
boundaries) there was a memory leak in the applet code's execution of
scripting addition commands, so that if you did enough of them naked, the
applet would run out of memory. Wrapping the call to the Addition in a
tell application "Finder ... end tell block caused it to be run by code
which didn't leak. Finder wasn't special in that use, except that by that
time few people were still quitting it so it was likely to be running.

And so a bad habit got started...and hasn't died out yet.
