Two additional thoughts:

(1) for many beginners, the Finder is the computer; if you aren't talking to
a specific application, then you should be talking to the Finder (so the
thinking goes);

(2) It took me a while before I understood that code doesn't need to be in a
tell block per se. An important cause is probably that all beginners'
examples I've seen are small "tell application" blocks.
