Applet getting SO FAT

A little question:

I wrote an applet which makes some search/replace using "munge" command
(akua sweets).
When it works with long files, it read data from a file (40000 bytes
chunks), makes the search/replace and write the new text to a new file.
Also, copies some resources (if they exist) from the old file to the new one
(PICT, TEXT, pnot).

It works fine, but every time it runs, it changes its size to:

Original > 30000 bytes (open-source)
First run > +1 byte every 10 readed bytes
Every run after the second > +100 bytes

It reads-copy data into handlers (I don't know if it's important).

The question:
What happens and how can I solve it?
