The standard Script Editor is automatically launched when you select the "Edit"
button on the error dialogs on all recent OS's.

Is there any way to change this to an editor that will accept more than 32k?

Yes there is! I don't know if you're familiar with BBEdit, but installing version 4.5 gave you a folder with BBEdit Utilities. Inside of that is an installer for a little thing called Simpletext Redirector, which is in fact an Applescript which has been modified with ResEdit. Documentation is included, and with a bit of tweaking you can use it to "redirect" any document to any compatible application.
If you need to know more, just let me know.

Pier.
