From our experience with FileMaker Server 3 and Retrospect 4 we developed
the strategy of only backing up the databases. Not that we had any problems
backing up the entire machine, but we realized there really isn't much to
setting up a FileMaker Server -
1. Install the system
2. Install server software
3. Install the Retrospect client
4. Restore databases
If we had a major catastrophe, we probably weren't going to be putting it on
the same machine anyway. We didn't even bother to shut down the databases
when backing up. We would register a few errors. But since we backed up
every 24 hours and the errors were never the same we never had any problems.
No data loss over three years running 200 databases.
We have now switched to Veritas Back Up Exec 8.5 from an NT box for speed
and it backs up open files (more of a concern with our other back ups).
Again we only back up the databases.
