I have struggled with the same bug. *Any* script that runs just fine when
launched manually can sometimes crash when launched from the Startup Items
folder. This is only under Mac OS 9.0.4, No such problems (with the same
scripts) under Mac OS 8.6.
[I haven't checked how Mac OS 9.0 behaves (officially, my G4 needs Mac OS
9.0.2 minimum), and haven't upgraded to Mac OS 9.1 yet because of bugs in AS
1.5. - waiting for 1.6.x.]
I have found some things that seem to affect this though:
1) Having VM on heightens the risk enormously
2) Having TCP/IP autoloaded heightens the risk somewhat
3) having any Internet app launched from the Startup Items folder heightens
the risk slightly
My impression is that using neither of these 3, the risk at crashing van be
brought back to an absolute minimum. But it still does occur about once a
year.
Of course having to disable VM sucks :( I have 256MB real RAM, but with VM
off I now again run into RAM limits :(
You can make things even less crash-prone by having just 1 applet in your
Startup items folder that in turn launches the other ones you want launched.
That way, there is only 1 applet still that may crash (the one in your
Startup Items folder), the other ones won't. At least that's my experience.
YMMV.
