There was a cool, old, little (Shareware?) application made by Ziff Davis
called "Thumbnail" that did exactly what you're trying to do. It was a
cool thingy that was a "MacUser Exclusive" so it received very limited
exposure.
I really like it for making custom icons. It's not an AppleScript
solution, but it is an easy drag & drop solution.
