usb modem support

I 'm writing a utility that scans for ports and then sets up the modem accordingly. Port scanning is done in c. Modem setup is done in AppleScript. If the user chooses to set up USB as a modem port, how do I set that up through AppleScript? It seems to only give me options for 'Internal Modem', 'Modem port', and 'Printer port'.
