David,
I've been using RealBasic in the way you describe. It works great! You can use RealBasic to do most of the processing, and use appleScript for the things that can't be done any other way. RealBasic also includes classes and functions for database connectivity. There's a lot of flexibility, and better debugging tools.
You'll still need to get a good commercial script editor. I use Script Debugger and it works well with RealBasic.

Hi all!

Now that my scripts are getting a bit more involved I am trying to evaluate what to do. I am currently using Smile for my script editor and while it's far better than Script Editor I think that one of the commercial solutions will serve me better - I still haven't gotten used to text window debugging.

In addition, one of the major roadblocks for me right now is the lack of [native] interface tools for AppleScript. I've used Dialog Director with some success but the lack of regular updates and the uncertain future with regard to OSX makes me a bit nervous. In addition, there's no IDE so it take a bit longer than if I were able to script and build the GUI from one app. FaceSpan appears to be a better alternative and with an OSX version in the works it looks like I will have forwards compatibility as well.

A commercial script editor (~$189) and FaceSpan for GUI building (~$199) = $389

I can use RealBasic to satisfy both needs for only $99. One of the main reasons why I was considering a better script editor was due to the complexity of the scripts that I am working with. If I relegate my AppleScript stuff to ONLY interapp communication and do all of the serious logic control in RealBasic then I can embed my AppleScript stuff in my RealBasic apps. In addition, RealBasic offers much greater capabilities than AppleScript in some areas so I woulnd't have to depend so much on the Finder or other OSAX.

Is there anything wrong with my logic, or anything that I've missed?
