There are multiple ways you could handle that situation. One, keeping a
text log file on disk, has already been mentioned.
You could always grab a copy of MondoMail (
http://www.acmetech.com/) and
email him when the backup is done. :) I use MondoMail on my gateway
machine at home to email me at work when someone tries to get into my
network, or when a server stops responding.
An example:
-- begin script
property pHost : "mail.snet.net"
property pToUser : "you@yourDomain"
property pFromUser : "you@yourDomain"
property pSubject : "Hello from MondoMail!"
try
tell application "Mondo Mail.fat"
send mail "Test message" subject pSubject to pToUser from pFromUser
SMTP gateway pHost
end tell
on error msg number errNum
display dialog "The following error was returned from MondoMail: " &
errNum & return & msg
end try
-- end script
Another alternative is to use Akua Sweets (
http://www.akua.com/) notify
command to create a notification dialog, which results in a friendly little
yellow message box in the top right-hand corner of the screen that doesn't
inhibit use of the machine, doesn't slow the machine down, and won't go away
until the operator closes it (or until another notification is displayed).
Here's an example of that:
-- begin script
tell application "Finder" -- You have to tell a certain application to
display the notification
notify with alert "This is a sample notification." with sound named
"ChuToy"
end tell
-- end script
There are probably more ingenuous ways you can deal with the problem. I
hope this gives you some ideas. :)
