Just throwing out ideas here...
Try moving the entire Preferences folder to your desktop and restarting. It
could be another app or even the Finder screwing things up. If the problem
is not fixed, move the pref files back, and restart again.
The only other thing that comes to mind is that maybe AppleScript is trying
to access part of your network or file system that is screwed up. Try
rebuilding the desktop on all hard drives.
You'd be surprised how many times I have solved strange problems like this
by removing bad prefs files, and rebuilding the desktop! :)
