Mac OS X Alert Sound

My main question right now deals with Applescript, and I can't seem to find anyone trying to do the same thing as me! I know that I can use Applescript to play the current alert sound via the "beep" command. What I'd like to do is play any sound that is in the native sound format (in OS 9 it's System7 Sounds; in OS X I assume it's AIFF since that's what the alerts are). Do you know if this is possible?

If it's not possible directly I am considering the ugly work around of changing the alert sound temporarily, giving the beep command, and then changing the alert sound back again. If I go this route, however, I don't know how to tell System Preferences to do what I want because there is no Dictionary available for System Prefs in X.

Any suggestions? Or other work arounds?
