It has indeed broken, 3":" as alias2 was truly useful.
So I've gone back to..
copy (path to me as string) to pathToMe
set AppleScript's text item delimiters to ":"
copy text items 1 thru -2 of pathToMe as string to pathToContainer
set applescript's text item delimiters to ""
... to get the path name of the container.
Oh well.
