I've tried a number of ways to save an attachment but I get a "Can't get

Hi John,
(This isn't a direct answer to your question; but maybe it will help you.)
Personally, I drag messages straight out of Entourage to back them up. It's
extremely fast and very convenient.
If I were you, I would try to see if I can get Entourage to do via
AppleScript what it does when you drag a message from Entourage to the
desktop. When you do this, Entourage creates a text file on the desktop
containing the message in it's entirety, including the attachments encoded
in the email. To get attachments out, you just drag the message file over
Stuffit Expander. Since the message is plain text, you can run searches on
it easily. The only difference in your case would be that you are storing
the message text (including encoded attachments) in a FileMaker database.
