Hi List,
I'd like to make more sophisticated expanding pop-up menus in FileMaker
Pro 5 (Mac) than offered by the built-in valueLists. The appearance
should be straight forward like the menus in the top menu bar incl.
sub-menus but with the possibility to place those menus on any desired
position on the layout: e.g. a simple button ('menuTriggerButton') would
trigger a script that opens the pop-up menu underneath the button, etc...
Initially I've tried this by switching to a different layout
('menu_1_Layout') once you hit the 'menuTriggerButton' that shows a
simulated pop-up menu but this becomes very, very cumbersome because you
have to create a different layout for each menu and sub-menu.
Later I've tried the John-Mark Osbornes's 'Expanding Menu' trick using
portals but this unfortunately wastes a lot of interface real-estate.
I couldn't find any FileMaker plug-in that addresses this need so I
thought it might be possible to do this with AppleScript. Since I am
fairly new to AppleScript and my FileMakers skills are medium at best (I
am a Director/Lingo nerd) I've to ask you for some advice:
Isn't there a way to use a resource editing utility like ResEdit to add
custom menus to the "MENU" resource in FileMaker and call them up with
AppleScript to place them on custom positions in a layout? Sounds very
straight forward but I have no idea if this is possible or how to do it.
I'd appreciate if you can point me in the right direction.
Thank you for your time,
erwin
