Here are a few quick personal observations -
1. I have found that it's like a designer putting together a portfolio. You
start small and with hard work you get bigger jobs. You write scripts that
improve people's day-to-day work (desktop) before you do enterprise work.
Word gets around. Be ready to show working examples to "important" people.
Build on successes.
2. When I propose scripting a solution to a "non-scripter", I talk in terms
of timesavings, money savings, and accuracy improvement. I don't mention
loops, handlers variables, etc...they don't care how it's done, as long as
it's an improvement over the current system.
3. Usually it's the people at the bottom of the food chain -(those who do
most of the mouse pushing) - who are the most receptive.
4. It doesn't hurt if your AppleScripts can help Windows based businesses
also. Ex. - using an older Mac to maintain the ftp site or automatically
send out email - cross platform stuff. I use the Apple System Profiler to
generate .csv files that go to a Windows based auditing system.
I haven't done freelance work. I've worked for successively larger companies
where Macs are important to the business' success - not just "The graphics
department has a few Macs". I've also stayed in touch with people and
companies I've worked with before
And there are people here that know a lot more about AppleScript than me.
