I started with AppleScript when it was first announced by Apple; sent in my
$350 bucks for the application and two 3-ring binders of information. In a
matter of a couple of weeks I had automated some major projects where I
worked (using Quark). But I was left with some nasty knots on my head from
"banging my head against the wall" trying to figure out some of the syntax
that "should work" but didn't. It wasn't long after that I started
evangelizing AppleScript. In 1996 I wrote AppleScripting for QuarkXPress. I
went to all of the major publishing houses, including PeachPit, but they
didn't know what AppleScript was all about and could only come back with
"it's too narrow of a market." So I published the book myself just in time
for Apple to start it's slide into "oblivion." (Remember when?) But it was
AppleScript--thanks to Sal Sogohian (I'll never spell it right) and Cal
Simone (and probably others)--that kept Macintoshes on the desks of
publishers and designers.
I kept firing off article after article to magazines. A few were
published--most were rejected--the magazines just didn't get it.
I am still evangelizing but it's been an uphill battle. You who subscribe
to the digests already are sold on AppleScript. But do you know how
difficult it is to get someone at ABC Printing Company to let you in the
front door to show them what can be done with AppleScript?
I am thrilled to see Apple come out with AppleScript Studio and AppleScript
Menu. I am sure this will help AppleScript's visibility.
If you have any ideas how to get the message out, I am just one of many I
am sure who would be glad to help "carry the torch".
