scriptable video player with compression settings

Dear List,

I am new to this list and may not be aware of a previous thread with this
topic, but I am looking for a way to set the compression settings of a
recorded video input (analog), such as in Apple's HackTV, using AppleScript.
The only player I am aware of that is scriptable is Apple's VideoPlayer and
I was not able to choose the compression settings for captured video here.
The only choices available are: no comp medium comp strong comp. Is there
probably a way to set the default video compression Quicktime is using?
Is there any comprehensive list of Apple scriptable applications? Since I
got into scripting I find myself spending a lot of time to search for
scriptable stuff.

Thank you very much in advance for any suggestions you might have.
