Probably others will also suggest this, but Tex-Edit Plus is very
scriptable, doesn't have the 32K limit, supports styled text (etc.)
and is an inexpensive shareware download. ($15). It's pretty robust,
and has been around for several years so most of the known bugs are
worked out.
