---> Lately, many people on this list have stated that they have had
"issues" with FaceSpan. So, I'd like to take this opportunity to express my
opinion about this software, as well as AppleScript Studio.
Years ago, when I first learned about FaceSpan, I was extremely impressed by
the fact that I could build AppleScript applications with the same look and
feel of any other Macintosh app. Now that I've been writing AppleScripts for
many years, I can say that much of what I have done would not have been
possible without FaceSpan.
My experience with FaceSpan has generally been very good. Not to say that
other people haven't had problems, but I have not experienced the types of
problems that are being describing on this list. For me, FaceSpan's
usefulness has in no way been limited on any Mac OS (except Mac OS X, so
far). I have not experienced any crashing or stability issues, and I have
NEVER experienced problems with variables becoming randomly undefined. The
scripts I have built with FaceSpan have been simple to EXTREMELY complex,
and yet they have remained to be stable applications.
On the rare occasion that I do encounter a problem with a FaceSpan
application I have developed, it can almost always be attributed to
something else - the Finder, memory issues, etc.
While Dialog Directory (or other Scripting Additions) might be useful for
some, I prefer to develop my scripts without the use of Scripting Additions,
if possible. This makes them more portable, easier to install, there are
fewer licensing issues (if you're developing for clients), etc.
As far as support, I can't really comment on support issues with FaceSpan,
because I have not really ever had to contact them for support. I will say
that FaceSpan comes with an extremely detailed user manual, as well as many
sample scripts. In addition, the AppleScript mailing lists have proven to be
almost all the support I could need.
In conclusion, I am excited about the announcement of AppleScript Studio,
and I definitely plan to develop new applications with it, once it is
available. However, I will also continue to have many uses FaceSpan, such as
converting old FaceSpan applications to OS X. Many clients will not want to
pay for their solutions to be entirely redeveloped with AppleScript Studio
simply for a new look and feel. While I can't say how much I'll be using
FaceSpan in the future (this depends on the feature comparison with
AppleScript Studio), I do encourage you to continue developing an OS X
version.
Thanks,
-Ben
