OK, so Im a week late in replying. I was at Seybold, and AppleScript Studio
was no surprise (Apple had been kind enough to let us know what was in the
works before they dropped the "bomb").
"So where does that leave FaceSpan?" people are asking. I don't have this
from official sources, but my understanding is that FaceSpan is still going
ahead with the OSX version. It's benefit will be that it will be backward
compatible where AppleScript Studio is not.
What I saw of AppleScript Studio was impressive to say the least.
AppleScript Studio put me in the mind of Visual Basic as far as its
structure, and difficulty of use. Not difficult. But probably somewhat more
difficult than the "average" Quark or Adobe product user may want to tackle
in my estimation. My proposal to the people who make decisions here at DTI
is that we offer FaceSpan as a light version (no developer tools, no
licensing, etc.) for an "average user can afford" price under $100 (some
people I talked to at Seybold suggested $59; I was thinking more in the
neighborhood of $89). Include an easy to follow step-by-step instruction
book and wizards to help the beginner and target that market. Of course, we
would still have the full blown version (with development tools and
licensing) for an upgrade price.
This would leave the Mac user with three choices for development:
FaceSpan for backward compatibility; and for ease of use for the "average"
user who wants to put a "Face" on his AppleScripts.
AppleScript studio for the more advanced user who wants to develop for the
Macintosh 10.1 and above environment only
RealBasic for the more advanced user who wants to develop cross-platform
applications.
And, who knows maybe Revolution will enter the fray with the abiity to add
AppleScript to the array of languages that it supports.
I would appreciate feedback from the AppleScript community as to the above.
