Dave,
I'm puzzled by your response because what you are calling an inelegant
work-around is to me one of the most powerful features of the Palm Desktop.
Are you aware that you can attach an AppleScript button to a custom field
which, when clicked, will execute your own scripts -- whether or not data is
in the custom fields? Isn't clicking on the ClarisWorks/MacWrite icon to
launch a MacWrite letter template the same as clicking on an AppleScript
button to launch the word-processor and template of your choice?
Also, have you tried editing the provided MacWrite Pro and Claris Works
letter link scripts to use your preferred word processor and letter
templates? It seems as though Claris hard coded The Macwrite Pro and
ClarisWorks choices in the icon's preferences dialog, but this is probably
because they were both word processors made by Claris, who also made Claris
Organizer/Palm Desktop. Nevertheless, you can edit those scripts to launch
your own word processor.

So, does that help to clarify my question? Thanks.
