Obviously this is over simplified, but I don't understand why it would be so

Is this your own 'Recent Documents' folder, or the one in the Apple Menu
(pre OSX) - I ask this because the Apple Menu Recent Docs folder is a fairly
unreliable guide to recently saved documents.
When you say 'Find items "X-X"', are you trying to find the originals of
alias files ('original item of' in AS Speak), or items modified after a
certain date, or what?
And when you've found the items that you want to back up, where are you
trying to copy them to? Is it the drive containing the blank CD media, or
just somewhere on the network that stuff gets stored ready for burning.
A little more info about the precise steps involved in what you are trying
to achieve would help the helpers.
