Are the first and every other character a capital E with an accent mark ?
If so then it looks like you have the same problem I had. Somehow a OS X
foreign language Script Editor ran under OS9. If you look at a Finder
window, in list view, and scripts or applets have a type that's garbage
characters, then that's what's happened.

Let me know and I'll dig up the steps to fix it.
