set the visibility of thefile to false

I doubt that it's worth the overhead if you don't use it for something else but Apple's MPW, now free, does it with the simple command:

setfile -a V Luna:Documents:fileinquestion

A lower case v reverses it.

MPW and it's smaller cohort, ToolServer, can be told to execute command lines like the above via AppleEvents.
