In Eudora Pro 4.3.3 - the version I've stayed with for a while now -
it's not possible to create a new address book in AppleScript and
keep the script running - or at least I haven't managed to do it. I
don't know if this is a bug in the version I'm using, or if it was
never intended to work. The behaviour is consistent. If I run the
script to make a new address book, the address book gets made, but
Eudora croaks with a type 2 error. Every time, even with lots of
memory. I'm just wondering if any of you who use Eudora have tried
this with a newer version and whether it works or not.
Having said that, there's a work around that allows one to at least
use the script. Here's the approach I took to get around the constant
crash.
You can get the Finder to make the new address book file with the
appropriate name, type code and creator code. But Eudora won't "see"
it unless you quit Eudora and restart it. But since I'm running the
script from Eudora's menu or toolbar, I don't want to kill Eudora as
the script is running in Eudora's memory space. So the solution is to
get the Finder to open a different set of Eudora settings (which
changes Eudora's mail environment) and then immediately open the
settings file for the context you were in when you launched the
script, which switches you back. This keeps Eudora running, but
allows it to renew its view of the mail environment, so it now sees
the new address book, which can then be populated by the script. It's
a bit of an inconvenience, but it works.
If anyone has successfully made new address books through a script
with Eudora 5.x then I'd like to hear about it.
