Hi, Tony. AppleScript isn't really up to what you need here.

Your best bet is to make your own sound sets. I used a freeware utility
called SoundSet Constructor to do this - it's not pretty, and hasn't been
updated since 98, but it works with OS9, and you can use it to assign sounds
selectively to various actions/events . (The author promises a carbonized
version sometime 'soon', and in the meantime the original is no longer
available from the source - contact me off-list if you want me to send you a
copy.)

There are also huge libraries of custom sound sets out there on the web (try
a search with sherlock or google). Many of them, admittedly, are full of
poorly edited clips from The Simpsons & South Park, or snippets of Aerosmith
songs, but there are some good ones too (my favourite is the 'Carl Stalling'
set, featuring music & sound effects from old WB looney tunes & merrie
melodies). One to avoid is the Seinfeld sound set, which just consists of
endless variations of that hideous slap-bass twanging that links the scenes.
(Just made that last bit up actually, but it's a scary thought.)

FYI - you can also make new sound sets for Outlook Express (to prevent your
Mac from sounding like a PC every time you collect your mail) with a
freeware app called Expression, available at www.soundcentral.com.

Enjoy
