This is a known bug with AS 1.6 (the upgrade beyond AS 1.5.5; AS 1.5.5 comes
standard with Mac OS 9.1) and has been discussed a fair bit on this list and
the WebSTAR-Talk list.

The Applescript team knows about the bug. A fix should be included in the
next Applescript update, scheduled for release with OSX 10.1.

The workarounds are to either

1) Revert to AS 1.5.5 (if you need the files I can send them to you - just
keep your mailbox free)

2) Leave the scripts running full time.

3) Wait for the update/bug fix (and pray no new problems were introduced).

Question for Chris Nebel: will the AS update run on MacOS 9.1, or will it
require MacOS 9.2.1?
