With Mac OS 8.6 (AppleScript 1.3.7), English Dialect *must* be in the
Dialects folder in the Scripting Additions folder. I believe that 1.3.7
can locate the Scripting Additions folder in either the System Folder or
its pre-Mac OS 8 location, the Extensions folder. This version isn't
affected by the CarbonLib folder problem as Script Editor wasn't
Carbonised until Mac OS 9.

[A few seconds later.] I've just tried moving the Scripting Additions
folder into the Extensions folder on my 8.6 machine, and got a "dialect
not available" error when trying to open a script in Script Editor. So
the SA folder *has* to be in the System Folder in Dave's case. He could
try looking in the Extensions folder to see if there's one there.
