We have been extracting data (size, resolution, color space) via Applescript
from PS files a couple of years via reading in the first 600K of the file
and going to specific locations. I am not sure if it is compatible with all
the latest versions. I will try to locate the AS stuff over the weekend and
post it.

We also wrote some C code for a client to use with their asset manager
ingestion engine so that data would be placed in the assets record. It
might be convertible to an OSAX? I will talk to my C programmer to see what
it would take.
