Grant,

This isn't an AppleScript solution, but it is a very feasible one that I
use in the field with a number of client sites (and my own system)... If the
drive is formatted with FWB Hard Disk Toolkit (FWBb"HDT), you can mark any
partition as being auto-mount or non-auto mounting, and the software includes
a mounting utility. So, I set up the server with (typically) 4 partitions: a
system partition, an apps partition, a shared data partition, and a
non-mounting application installers + utilities partition. When I want access
to the last (non-mounting) partition, I simply open the FWB Mounter utility
and hit mount.
There are two other distinct advantages to the FWB HDT over the Apple
Formatter:
1. driver level data encryption is an option (from simple encryption to
DES-3); and
2. Parameter tuning for SCSI drives allows you to change such settings as how
the drive's cache tables are set-up and the read ahead/write buffer sizes,
which can be a big speed difference on drives that get used heavily.

Oh: www.fwb.com

Best Wishes
